GEOGAZ H2 STORAGE

PROJECT TO BUILD A GASEOUS HYDROGEN STORAGE FACILITY IN A LINED MINE CAVERN IN LAVERA

This project sets out to build a pooled storage facility for gaseous hydrogen in a mined cavern lined with a metal casing. Its construction is planned next to the current GPL storage site operated by Geogaz in Lavera, in the centre of the industrial port of Marseille-Fos, which will become a high consumer of decarbonised hydrogen in the future. This innovative underground hydrogen storage concept will have a smaller impact on the safety of industrial areas than surface storage facilities. It is an alternative to salt caverns, which are few and far apart and unevenly distributed across the region, with a high potential for reproducibility.
