The electricity industry in the Southern Region: potential for 10,000 jobs by 2030

Sustainable employment is the next battle to be fought in the regions to support economic recovery.

In the Southern Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, the electrical industry is a key sector, accounting for 8.5% of national employment, or 51,000 jobs. The sector is undergoing radical change, and is expected to create more than 10,000 local jobs by 2030.

These are the initial conclusions of the prospective study conducted by Mediterranean Industries with all the players in the sector* including Capenergies. In particular, the cluster has helped to identify occupations in short supply, recruitment difficulties and the adaptations needed to give access to disabled workers.

TOWARDS CHANGING JOBS AND SKILLS

The energy sector is currently characterised by major technological developments that are creating jobs and transforming skills.

The aim of this study is to point young people, jobseekers and retrainees in the direction of the careers that are recruiting in the electrical sector, and to enable them to train for these careers. As Christine BAZE, President of Industries Méditerranée and Director of Strategy, Industrial Sectors and Institutional Relations at EDF's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Regional Division points out " 41 shortage occupations have been identified. The sector offers a wide range of career prospects at all levels of qualification, with links to a number of dynamic sectors in the region (industry, construction, shipbuilding, etc.). A varied range of training courses already exists throughout the region, and these need to be adapted with agility to future developments. "

In the Southern Region, two sectors of the electrical industry are the main providers of jobs, as Christine BAZE points out: " the electricity system, with 25,000 direct jobs, including 13,000 in the nuclear sector, and construction, with 18,000 direct jobs. And there are major prospects for growth, to meet the objectives of the PPE, particularly in terms of developing renewable energy and energy efficiency."The outlook for the Southern Region is even brighter, with a recovery plan soon to be announced in which energy will play a key role.

The cluster is particularly involved in this study, seeing it as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of future changes in jobs and skills. The cluster supports companies in their recruitment efforts, helps to make energy-related professions more attractive and assists organisations in adapting their training programmes.

The results of the study, including recommendations for the electricity sector in the Southern Region, will be presented in detail this autumn.
