[PRESS RELEASE] SYRIUS, the pioneering programme to decarbonise industry, enters phase 2 - 29 April 2025

Fos-sur-Mer - 29 April 2025

First national winner in 2023 of the ZIBaC (Low Carbon Industrial Zone) Call for Projects, the SYRIUS Programme is continuing and intensifying its commitment to the 2025-2030 period. Positioned in the second phase of this call for projects, the SYRIUS collective wants to accelerate and make a reality of the decarbonisation of the Marseille-Fos industrial-airport zone.

A STRONG COLLECTIVE COMMITMENT TO DECARBONISATION AND REINDUSTRIALISATION

PIICTO and its partners in the SYRIUS Programme are preparing to take part in Phase 2 of the national ZIBaC Call for Projects (AAP) for France 2030, led by ADEME (Agence de la Transition Écologique) and published on Tuesday 29 April 2025. This is a unique opportunity to accelerate the implementation of concrete, ambitious projects for the region, identified during phase 1 of the programme, thanks to a package of public funding of up to €16m.

THE COLLECTIVE'S OBJECTIVES FOR PHASE 2

  • Continuing and expanding the collective dynamic initiated with the SYRIUS programme from 2022 onwards in the region.
  • Promote synergies identified between industrial players to optimise the use of resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Promote low-carbon energies and storage/reuse solutions to supply industries in a sustainable way.
  • Support innovation and the emergence of new low-carbon technologies and molecules. Communicating widely on the projects and the progress of the approach to economic players and the general public.

Phase 2 of the SYRIUS Programme is intended to be established over several years and will enable preliminary engineering studies to be carried out for the major infrastructures identified in phase 1 (hydrogen hub, CO₂ hub, energy hub, etc.).

THE SYRIUS PROGRAMME

This large-scale local initiative is the result of a collective, cross-sector approach, led by PIICTO and its partners Capenergies, Novachim, the Port of Marseille-Fos, the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolitan Area and the Southern Region.

This programme, 1 national winner of the ZIBaC AAP launched by ADEME in 2022, involves more than 50 major industrial and logistics players in the area (Fos-sur-Mer, around the Étang de Berre, Gardanne, Meyreuil), as well as local authorities, developers, etc.

SYRIUS is based on rigorous methodological analyses and concrete industrial ecology solutions, consolidating the commitments of companies, local authorities and the State to reduce CO₂ emissions by -80% by 2050 (almost 18Mt/year of CO₂ emissions in the region to date), while preserving economic development and employment in the region.
