FLEXIGRID: Review of the event presenting the European project to players in the field of optimised energy systems

The partners of the European FLEXIGRID projectfunded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 framework programme, organised a virtual event on Friday 26 March 2021 that brought together more than 50 players from the optimised energy systems sector.

At this interactive meeting, the activities and expected results of the project were presented, with the aim of implementing interoperable solutions to bring greater flexibility to the grid. The discussions that took place provided an opportunity to share the players' visions of the challenges facing the European electricity system of the future.

Innovative solutions to meet the challenges posed by renewable energies to electricity distribution networks in Europe

Introducing the event, Samuel Borroy, researcher at the CIRCE Foundation and project coordinator, recalled the main objective of FLEXIGRID: Ensuring the safe and stable operation of electricity distribution networks with a high proportion of variable renewable energies.

The project involves developing and implementing a range of innovative hardware and software solutions, including the secondary substation of the future, smart meters with new functionalities, and software solutions for forecasting and managing the network and congestion situations.

The consortium in charge of this project brings together 15 academic and industrial partners from 5 EU countries: research and technology organisations and universities, SMEs and large companies, and distribution network operators. Capenergies is a member of this group, and in particular leads the actions relating to the economic models and the strategy for exploiting the results of the project, which aim to prepare their deployment on the market.

A key year for implementing the project

The year 2021 will be marked by the continued development of solutions, as well as the launch of demonstration activities in 4 European countries: Spain, Greece, Croatia and Italy.

At the event on 26 March, the partners in charge of carrying out the demonstrations presented the characteristics of the various sites selected, as well as the use cases that will be tested at each of them. These reflect challenges commonly encountered by European distribution networks: protection of networks operating with a high proportion of renewable energy, or optimisation of energy systems for residential or commercial customers, for example.

Finally, the Cristiana MarchitelliPolicy Officer at the European Commission's DG ENER, and those of representatives from the Municipality of Kiffisia (Greece), the Cuerva Group (Spain), HEP-ODS (Croatia) and TERNA (Italy), shed light on the challenges associated with the energy and digital transition, the needs of players in the energy sector in this context, and the role that the solutions developed as part of the FLEXIGRID project could play in meeting them.
