New nanometric catalysts for PEM* electrolysis

Water electrolysis is the hydrogen production process that potentially has one of the lowest environmental impacts. The development of low-temperature electrolysis has been slowed by limited resources of iridium, the basic constituent needed to dissociate water under the operating conditions of PEM* electrolysis. The MOISE project aims to improve mass activity by a factor of 5 compared with IrO2 by reworking the anode architecture. The proposed approach involves dispersing iridium oxide on a nanometric scale on a catalyst support based on doped tin dioxide.
