ASSESSMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2 IN THE SUD-PACA REGION: VERIFICATION OF FOSSIL EMISSIONS AND NATURAL CO2 SINKS IN THE AIX-MARSEILLE-PROVENCE METROPOLITAN AREA

According to available inventories, the SUD Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region accounts for around 11 % of national CO2 emissions. These sometimes uncertain data must be
independently verified: the CO2-SUD research project. AMM aims to improve knowledge of the carbon footprint of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area as a major urbanised and industrialised area.
The aim is to characterise and quantifier :
firstly, the variability of atmospheric CO2 on different time scales, from the rural area of the Haute Provence Observatory to the heart of the city of Marseille,
and the contribution of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and those of natural ecosystems to this variability.

The results obtained will be used to verify the data in the ATMOSUD CO2 emissions inventory, and will help political decision-makers and managers of natural areas to take the most effective action possible to reduce CO2 emissions in the southern region.
